about

Why record a relatively obscure Beach Boys song one might wonder... and well, that's a fair question. It was definitely not a hit for the group, and wasn't even a single from their now beloved "Love You" album, but it's the song that made me fall in love with it.

On my first listen to "The Beach Boys Love You" the songs that stood out initially were the sillier and let's say... more lighthearted entries, which can be the case with many of the Boys' post-"Pet Sounds" records. And how could they not? Songs like "Solar System," "Johnny Carson," & "I Wanna Pick You Up" make you wonder what direction the band was going in at the time, if any at all. And who could forget "Ding Dang"???

It wasn't until later that I stumbled upon a YouTube video containing all the Brian Wilson solo piano demos for the album, and I was BLOWN AWAY. The songs were so sincere and wholesome; it was amazing to hear Brian singing straight from his heart, especially on the more earnest songs I hadn't noticed before. It was then I also learned that this album was originally planned as a solo Brian album, and he wrote and performed nearly the whole thing by himself, with the band acting mainly as vocalists. The Brian that had been missing from the world seemed to have finally returned to form. It made me want to explore the album again, but in a whole new way.

I listened again and it rapidly became one of my favorite Beach Boys' albums, but at times I almost still preferred the piano demos. I wanted to record a version of my own in that vein, and with that sincerity. I tried to record it as beautifully as I could, and I hope you can feel that in my version.

Thank you for your support! Sofa City Sweetheart (and Brian Wilson) LOVE YOU!
